VRILL INSIGHTS
LEAVE YOUR HOME TOWN
At 19 I used to sit and recite quotes I had remembered over the years. One went, "You are what you repeatedly do, excellence then is not act, but a habit."
I guess that is true but it also pushes a lot of people into the optimization frenzy.
I remember reading a book all about the idea that you are the average of the people you spend the most time with.
It had examples such as one person in a friend group stops smoking and then slowly all stop.
After reading it I got an ego boost because I went, "Oh, I get it. If I change my life and install positive habits so will all around me and all around them and all around them."
Writing this I recall Jordan Peterson saying something like, "you are three people away from affecting one billion."
Same idea more abstractly.
But the true insight from the quote, the book and JBP is that the environment you inhabit shapes you and that you shape your environment.
If one is to truly know oneself, which is the goal, would not living in radically different environments reveal the one constant that is YOU?
After taking the leap of faith and trusting the innate sense of adventure that pulls all men I have learnt more about my self than in previous decades.
My fears, my hesitation, my lack of taking action toward the unknown abyss pulling me was all a mirage, a self imposed illusion, a mental prison.
I had all the reasons not to leave Stockholm. Safety, friends, family, a clear career path, a stable job, bla bla bla...
I'm a decedent of the fucking Vikings. I have a spirit that animates my soul and it would not shut up.
I had to go. I've always known it. I faked it by going to Spain with the predetermined plan of going back to Stockholm after 8 months.
It was an 8 month retirement not a true adventure. I had not let go of the self-imposed illusion.
The heroes journey is an archetypal story that speaks to your soul because it is more real than real. It exists across time, forever.
Your life starts on the other side of a fundamental leap into the unknown. Instead of the past determining your future it is the present that pulls you forward into the abyss.
You get to live a life of myth. Fighting off dragons, trickery and demons.
Eventually, if you're lucky, you will find a castle with your princess, protected by a dragon. Slay the dragon and the princess is yours.
Got a little abstract and philosophical but it is true. You can feel it.
To make it more real and feel closer. Here is reality for you.
The cost of living in most poorer countries is so low that there is literally nothing stopping you on going on the adventure of a lifetime.
Your life supposed to be an adventure. A life that would be worthy of a book.
You could live for under 1000 usd in a ton of amazing places.
Drink only milk, don't eat out, don't spend your money on bullshit to justify your unadventurous life to yourself (nor others). Save money, however much you need to take the fucking leap and go.
Get excited. Build something, create stuff, do dumb shit. Have no plan except the sense of adventure animating your soul and pulling you forward into a reality that your meant to live in.
Read things that get you in touch with the magic and myth that exists all around you.
Leave your home town and watch as what has been hidden deep inside of you slowly reveals itself to you.
If this doesn't speak to you that's fine, I'm not talking to you at all. But to the dudes for whom it does. Listen.
The best time to plant an apple tree was 20 years ago. So, just go.
Fuck the consequences, fuck the justification, fuck the rationale.
You do not need any of that. You need an adventure. A life that is on the line between complete chaos and absolute insanity.
You are crazy. I'm crazy. Live a crazy life you crazy motherfucker.
